Grounds

Large Old Tree Massey University has 106 hectares, comprised of the Turitea and Hokowhitu campuses and associated properties.

  • There are 11,500 difference taxa recorded within the University grounds.

The Grounds Team is responsible for all campus landscaping and maintenance. Off campus maintenance is tendered out to Lawncare Ltd.

The team is involved in a wide range of activities including design, landscaping, tree and shrub maintenance, lawn mowing, turf and sports-field maintenance, recycling of green waste, weed control and mulching, seed and cutting propagation, planting and general garden maintenance.

The campus is recognised for its extensive grounds with diverse plantings, and the wide selection of exotic and indigenous plantings are used for both teaching and general landscape.

Some very rare species, propagated from seed or cuttings, make up the luxurious grounds that attract a diverse array of birdlife.

Many arid, tropical and sub-tropical varieties not normally known to grow as far south as Palmerston North, nor to tolerate the weather conditions of the Manawatu, are a testament to the achievement of the Grounds Team.

The sports area, including fields, the Community Athletic Track, and the Equestrian Centre, is continuing to grow in reputation.

  • The Massey University grounds are listed as a New Zealand Botannical Garden.

Arborists, botanists, other Universities, and home gardeners alike look upon Massey as a model to replicate.
