First Aid training

Guideline for determination number of first aiders

Staff requesting the University to fund first aid training need to demonstrate a need for the training as detailed below:

The following situations require that at least one currently trained first aider shall be readily available (including when staff are absent (eg annual or unplanned leave), all working hours including shifts, over time and outside normal hours) when teaching, research, or work is being conducted:

  • When first aid treatment to staff or students for injuries is given routinely as a part of the work.
  • Where there are high risk significant hazards (see tables 1 and 2 in Working After Hours Policy for examples) in your workplace that require first aid capability.
  • When a current first aid certificate is a pre-condition of teaching, research, or work practice.  Examples are; practicing certificates for electricians, Antarctica travel.
  • Where student supervision occurs and alternative support systems are not readily available. Examples include; field work in remote situations, over night travel with students to rural or remote areas, library/studio/workshop/laboratory evening opening, halls of residence and student social functions.
  • Routine moderate to high risk work after hours, off campus or alone. Examples include: facilities staff, security, vet nursing, farm staff, gardeners.
  • Other staff requesting funding will need to have their manager’s justification demonstrating the first aid training is required to ensure capacity for first aid treatment for a group of staff. Note: If adequate first aid capacity exists in term of the above list, and a manager want to promote First Aid is part of the workplace culture, then the Manager may be asked to assist with cost of training to  avoid training budget over subscription.

Note: Organisations who provide services to the University (eg Child care centres, catering  contactors, tenants, staff, student associations) are expected to have an equivalent  system to ensure they have  sufficient first aid capacity to deal with their own first aid, and Massey staff or students who may need first aid assistance, while in the facility or activity controlled by the service provider.

Funding and access to first aid courses funded by the Health and Safety budget is as below:

  • Massey University’s permanent employees.
  • Temporary staff who are employed in a contract of at least 6 months (or if the contract is likely to be renewed) in areas where first aid competency is required such as: events such as field trips, workshop assistance or exam invigilator supervisor where the first aid training competency is required.

The following categories of individuals can use the course booking system but do not qualify for course payment by the Health and Safety office.   If a Department wishes the staff member to do first aid training, the Department must provide a GL or PR code on request, or details taken for invoicing or payment if an individual requires training. Places need to be available in the course as permanent employees have preference.

  • Temporary and casual staff on less than 6 month contracts
  • Fully owned subsidiary organisations eg Massey Ventures Limited, and its subsidiaries such as: Estendart Limited, Estendart Holdings Limited, E-Centre Limited.
  • Contracted organisations who provide services to the University and tenants eg Child care centres, cleaning contractors, accommodation contactors, staff of staff/student associations.
  • Postgraduate students.
  • Residential Advisor’s - first aid training is funded by each campus student services.

Please note: Departments of booked attendees who do not turn up at a course without good reason will be invoiced the course cost.

Training Standards

A qualified first aider is defined as a person having successfully completed an NZQA 6400, 6401, 6402 or Department of Labour approved 16 hour course, or equivalent refresher course within the last two years.
