Sending large emails

All emails, inbound and outbound, are scanned by MailMarshal (Massey's email filtering/virus scanning solution). Although Massey allow emails up to 100MB in size to be sent, other organisations may not receive emails larger than 10MB. When an email attachment contains binary data, it is base64 encoded. Base64 at least doubles the size - for example this can result in a 2MB document producing a 5MB email.

Give our ZendTo service a go!

ZendTo is a service to make it easy for you to move files, including large files up to 20GB, in and out of Massey.

  • Share big files email can't handle
  • The maximum file size is currently 20GB
  • Access ZendTo via any web browser — zendto.massey.ac.nz
  • Use your Massey credentials to log in
  • ITS takes no responsibility for the security of files uploaded. Sensitive files should be encrypted prior to uploading

Get started

Have a Massey account

  • If you are a member of Massey, you can log in with your Massey username and password and send files to anyone, inside or outside of Massey. Start by logging into zendto.massey.ac.nz and then clicking the Drop-off button.

  • If you are a member of Massey and wish to ask someone outside Massey to send you some files, you can make the process a lot easier for them by logging into zendto.massey.ac.nz, then clicking the Request a Drop-off button. This means the other person does not have to pass any tests to prove who they are, which makes the whole process a lot quicker for them.

No Massey account

  • If you are not a member of Massey, you cannot log in but you can still send files to people at Massey if you know their email address. Start by going to zendto.massey.ac.nz then clicking the Drop-off button

Files are automatically deleted from ZendTo 14 days after you upload them, so you don't need to manually delete them.

Encrypting files to send via ZendTo

Encrypt files using Microsoft Office

Sometimes it’s easier to copy and paste other file types into an Office document and use Office encryption, rather than use other encryption software which the recipient may not have access to.

For information on encrypting Microsoft Office files, click here.

Encrypt files using Adobe Acrobat DC

If you regularly use PDF documents Adobe Acrobat DC has an option to encrypt files, as well as combine multiple pdf documents in one file.

Encrypt files using 7-Zip

7-Zip is an application that allows you to compress a file, create an encrypted file for transmission by email or via ZendTo, or combine multiple documents into one folder.
