Using your work laptop at home to access the internet

As long as you have a home internet connection you should be able to view web pages at home without changing anything on your laptop. If you have trouble accessing the web at home, check you have the configuration above — these settings will work at Massey and at home.

More information about proxy servers

A proxy server is a computer or program that acts as a buffer between your computer and the Internet.

Note:
ITS is migrating current firewall systems from Check Point to Fortinet over the course of 2015. See Security Project for more information.

When you try to access a web page while at Massey, your request is initially sent from your computer to the proxy server. This proxy server then processes your request and sends back the web page or item that you requested (or other appropriate responses such as the page is blocked).

The proxy server primarily does the following:

  • Speeds up web access by storing commonly viewed web pages in a web cache (storage place).
When someone requests a web page, the proxy server finds that page, gives it to you, but also keeps a copy in its web cache (storage). If another person requests the same page, it can be provided faster as it does not need to be searched for.

  • Massey University computers are kept behind a proxy server for anonymity and for security reasons.
Keeps the Massey user's computer and their searches "hidden" from the 'outside world'. Also controls access to and blocks undesirable sites or content, implements time restrictions on when web pages can be viewed, and provides better security to the computers at Massey.
