Labs and teaching rooms for students

ITS manages the operation of the University general student computing labs, offering Mac and Windows PC computers.  The computers are available for general student use when they are not booked for teaching purposes. A range of services are provided, including printing, free web mail, free internet access and student home (network) drives for document storage.

Each campus Library offers a Computer Zone / Wāhi Rorohiko for student use - free internet access is available to students here, as well as access to various software applications and IT-related support.  The Information Commons are open for longer times than many of the general student labs.

Saving your work

You should always save your work on your home drive (commonly called the H: drive)

Backing up your work is your responsibility.

Note: Please do not save to the hard drive of the computer as this is deleted when you log off the machine.

Logging off

It is important that you logout after you have finished or your session will remain active for the next student who uses that computer i.e. the next student will be able to use your computer budget, send emails from your account or perform activities that are not allowed and could result in some form of disciplinary action against you.

Paper Environments

Course folders/drop boxes can be accessed from the "Courses" folder contained within your H drive. You can only access the course folders while on campus, in a computer lab.

See Accessing a course folder/drop box for more information.

Printing

FollowMe printing is available via the labs and teaching rooms. FollowMe printing is Fuji Xerox's solution to allow documents to be submitted for printing and collected from any Fuji Xerox device on the same campus.

For more information about FollowMe see FollowMe Printing for Students.

Computer lab access and rules

Access

Most ITS Labs do not require a swipe card for access.

If you are taking a paper that uses a computer lab which does require a swipe card, details on how to obtain this card should be given to you by your paper coordinator / lecturer at the start of your course.

  • No smoking, eating or drinking allowed in the labs (water bottles with self sealing lids can be used).

  • Where a lab requires a card for access, these cards are the responsibility of the students they are registered to.  Abuse of the card can result in the removal of the card from the student.  Stolen or lost cards must be reported to Facilities Management.

  • Using P2P (Peer-to-Peer) applications is NOT PERMITTED in the computer labs.  (P2P applications include, but not limited to, KaZaA, Morpheus, Limewire, BitTorrent, Edonkey.)
