Application software updates are just as important as the OS updates, you need to consider all the other software applications that run on your computer that needs updating or patching, examples of application software that needs updating regularly is Java, Adobe and Internet Browser software.
Java is a technology that uses one type of code to allow you to view internet sites, play online games, chat with people and Java will allow it to run on a variety of computers such as Windows, Macs and Unix computers.
If you have Java installed on your computer you should be getting prompted periodically stating that there is a newer version available and do you want to upgrade.
Before installing a new version of Java you need to ensure that the Verified published is Oracle America, Inc as shown below:

An Internet Browser or Web Browser is the software application that allow you to view Internet sites on the Web. There are many types of Internet Browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari, SeaMonkey and many more. Internet Browsers are updated on a regular basis so we recommend setting up a bi-annual task to check that your browser is current or has last update patches installed.

Before installing new versions of software, you need to ensure that it has the correct Verified published of the Application Software like the example below — that shows the Verified publisher for Firefox is the Mozilla Corporation.
