Relocation Guidelines

The university offers a relocation package for new academic and senior general staff who are offered employment of three years or more and need to relocate either domestically or internationally to take up a position.

Massey engages the services of Crown Relocation as its relocation partner. HR Services will liaise with Crown to initiate relocation on behalf of Massey. Crown will work closely with the new staff member and their family to ensure they are well informed and the relocation is as smooth as possible. Travel arranged independently will not be reimbursed.

Relocation assistance will be offered to candidates who meet the criteria (listed below) and the University will cover the removal of household and personal effects, temporary accommodation and flights in accordance with the guidelines listed below.

Dependents are classified as spouse or partner, and any dependent children who are aged up to 18 years old, or aged 18/24 if enrolled in tertiary study and living with the new staff member.

Dependents are eligible for assistance with travel costs if the travel is completed within six months of the new staff members’ commencement at Massey, unless otherwise agreed.

Categories listed below are as follows:

  1. International appointments

  2. National appointments Grade G or above and Lecturer or above

  3. Appointments under Grade G and Lecturer

Accommodation

The University will cover the full cost of motel accommodation for fourteen consecutive nights (room only). All other costs incurred during the stay at the motel is the appointee’s responsibility and will be charged directly upon checkout.

Immigration

Massey University is an accredited employer for Immigration purposes. This allows the appointee to apply for a Talent (Accredited Employer) Work Permit and Visa in order to work in New Zealand. A Talent Visa enables to work toward permanent residency.

Massey reimburses up to NZ$2,000, upon submission of receipts, to assist with the cost associated with obtaining a New Zealand Work Permit or Permanent Residence Visa. Submission of receipts for reimbursement should be made within twelve months of joining the University.

Importing Vehicles

Transportation, clearance and customs costs will be the responsibility of the appointee.  Based on previous experience, Massey strongly recommends appointees do not import their motor vehicle(s) to NZ, as the requirements to do so are very strict and may incur unforeseen costs if faults are identified.  A vehicle may be deemed to be roadworthy in the country of origin, but not acceptable to NZ roads and conditions.

If there is a very good reason why an appointee wishes to import a vehicle, they must fully assess and accept the risk and responsibility of doing so.  NZTA Website:  Here

Importing Animals

Transportation, clearance, customs and agricultural costs will be the responsibility of the appointee.  As NZ is heavily reliant on agriculture, the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) have strict regulations about importing animals that must be followed.  It is important a potential appointee is made aware of their responsibilities and the potential impact of these regulations, as this may affect their decision to accept an appointment.  MPI Website information on importing pets:  Here
