Previous Employment at Massey University Check

All applicants provide details on any current or previous employment at Massey University as part of completing the Massey University Application for Employment Form. This check is a requirement for all applicants to fixed-term and ongoing positions but is not applicable to applicants applying for casual employment. 

At the time of determining the short listed applicants to be interviewed, the Chair of the Selection Committee will notify the HR Help Desk (HRHelpdesk@massey.ac.nz) of any potential shortlisted applicant(s) who declared they either currently work or have worked previously at Massey University. The HR Helpdesk will confirm whether the individual’s reason for leaving the University was due to a significant and/or questionable previous employment matter.


The term ‘significant and/or questionable previous employment’ refers to the following:

  • Serious misconduct that has resulted in some form of formal discipline for the individual, and/or
  • Dismissal.

Previous employment at Massey University checks will not include information regarding:

  • Written warnings that have expired.
  • Settlement Agreement in which the terms of settlement and all matters discussed in regards to this matter shall remain confidential to the parties.

Prior to the applicant being updated to ‘shortlisted’ in ImpelHR and being contacted for an interview, the HR Helpdesk will need to confirm with the Chair of the Selection Committee that the applicant has cleared the previous employment at Massey University check.

Wherever the pre-employment check provides evidence of the applicant having a previous questionable employment history of a significant concern, the applicant may only be shortlisted and interviewed if the Chair of the Selection Panel has gained the prior approval of their relevant Pro Vice-Chancellor/Assistant Vice-Chancellor or the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (People & Organisational Development) as the SLT members nominee.

If the Chair of the Selection Committee receives queries from applicants who have not been shortlisted for the position due to evidence of the applicant having a previous questionable employment history of a significant concern, the Chair should consult with their relevant HR Advisor first before responding.
