Resources that may be of interest to those staff nearing retirement are available at retirement planning resources. Massey is pleased to offer a range of transition options for staff which may be of interest.
The required period of notice of retirement is specified in your employment agreement with the University. If you wish to provide a shorter or longer period of notice than that specified in your employment agreement then you should discuss this with your manager and mutually agree a last day of duty that meets the needs of both you and your organisational unit. If you wish some of your notice period to include annual leave you need to be aware that this may only be taken if it is specifically approved by your manager.
Notice of retirement must be in writing and clearly state your last day of intended duty with the University. A sample resignation letter is provided to assist you in formally retiring from the University.
The retirement notice is submitted to your manager who may accept your notice. If your notice is accepted it will be forwarded to HR Services for appropriate administrative action which will include writing to you formally acknowledging your retirement and determining your eligibility for payment of a retirement gratuity.

As a manager once you accept a retirement please send this to HR Services to finalise the administrative requirements. If you have any questions, please contact your HR Advisor.
The departure checklist will assist in ensuring that needed administrative actions are taken care of, and also enable a smooth transition for both the leaving employee and the organisational unit. The departure checklist is available at the bottom on this webpage. It will also be sent to you when HR Services acknowledges the retirement.
Retiring staff are also eligible to apply for the Distinguished friend of Massey ID card.
Should it be necessary to replace the position, it is recommended that obtaining approval to recruit is commenced at this time. Please refer to our recruitment webpages for further information to these processes.
