Claiming Payment and a Lieu Day for Working on a Public Holiday

This form is to be completed by the staff member's manager.

If the Public Holiday would otherwise be a working day for your staff member, they will receive a lieu day which will appear in the Yourself portal.

Ordinary time has already been paid for through the normal fortnightly salary payment. The additional top up payment is paid at half time (T 0.5), for the actual number of hours worked on the Public Holiday.

If the hours worked on the Public Holiday were not a normal working day for the staff member, they will receive time and half for these hours worked but not an alternative day in lieu.

The Holidays Act 2003 provides for payment of the following Public Holidays:

  • Christmas Day
  • Boxing Day
  • New Year’s Day
  • The day following New Year’s Day
  • Waitangi Day
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Monday
  • Anzac Day
  • Queen’s Birthday
  • Labour Day
  • Anniversary Day of the Province in which the staff member works

If it had not been a public holiday, how many hours would your staff member normally have worked?

A full time person will normally be working 7.5 hours, depending on the employment agreement. In addition to payment for the hours worked, the staff member will receive an alternative holiday. If the day was not a normal working day, the staff member is not entitled to an alternative holiday.

How many hours were actually worked on the public holiday being claimed?

Your staff member will be paid at time and a half for any hours worked on the public holiday.
