The employment terms and conditions of many professional staff contain special payments to recognise outstanding performance and contribution. Such payments might be an accelerated progression within a salary range, a lump sum bonus for performance that consistently exceeds expectations or a lump sum bonus for a "one-off contribution such as a special project or substantial additional work.
