Salary Review Process for Academic Staff

If you are an academic staff member within a scale listed below, you are entitled to a salary review on the anniversary of your appointment or last salary progression on the scale until you reach a salary bar or the maximum of that scale.

  • Assistant Lecturers
  • Tutors/Senior Tutors
  • English Language Teachers/Senior English Language Teachers
  • Postdoctoral Fellows
  • Lecturer or equivalent (i.e. Research Officer/Practicing Veterinarians/Professional Clinician)
  • Senior Lecturer, Range 1 or equivalent (i.e. Senior Research Officer/Senior Practicing Veterinarians/Senior Professional Clinicians)

For staff at Senior Lecturer (or equivalent) in Range 2, salary progression is through the annual academic promotion process. The salaries of Associate Professors and Professors are reviewed each year by the Pro Vice-Chancellor.

Increment amounts for academic staff

If you have been appointed to a salary scale that has defined steps you will move one step a year, subject to satisfactory performance, until you reach either a bar or the maximum, as detailed in academic salary scales.

If you have been appointed to Range 1 of Senior Lecturer/Senior Research Officer or Senior Practicing Veterinarian/Professional Clinician, it is expected that you would take six years to progress from the bottom of the range to the top, subject to satisfactory performance.

Annual increases are equivalent to the range width divided by 6.

To progress over a bar, move more than one step within your scale or to the next scale you will need to apply for academic promotion.

Administration and approval of salary reviews

For staff in the list above (i.e. Assistant Lecturer to Senior Lecturer Range 1) a salary review form will be sent to managers two months in advance of the staff members annual review date by HR Services.

The staff member’s line manager will complete the salary review form indicating whether an increase is recommended or not recommended.

Before the review form is returned to HR Services, the staff member is given the opportunity to see the recommendation and make their own comments if they wish.

If you have been absent on parental leave or sick leave, your normal progression through the your salary grade/range is not affected. Your salary review will be carried out at the appropriate time with effect from your existing anniversary date.

Any other period you take as leave without pay, up to a maximum of two years in total, is ignored for the purposes of determining salary increases and review dates.
