Auckland Homestay

Homestay accommodation is when a student lives with a local family in the family’s home. Homestay is very popular for international students because this environment gives them the opportunity to practise English and learn about New Zealand culture in a safe and supportive environment. Homestay is also a good option for other students who would benefit from living in a family environment.

Please note:

  • All international students under the age of 18 must live in Massey-approved homestay, designated caregiver accommodation, or with their parents.
  • All Massey University approved homestay accommodation is compliant with the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016.

Massey University feels strongly about providing its students with quality accommodation options. We visit each prospective homestay host and carry out a police check on them before they can become approved hosts.

Each Massey University homestay student must be provided with 24-hour access to his or her own clean, tidy and warm room which has:

  • a bed and linen (laundered weekly)
  • a heater
  • desk, chair and reading lamp
  • pillows, blankets and towels
  • at least one set of drawers and a wardrobe
  • power points
  • a working smoke detector

Each homestay student must also have access to a kitchen, a telephone, bathroom, toilet, laundry facilities, living and dining rooms.

At all campuses, students are provided with morning, lunch and evening meals by their homestay hosts.

In Auckland, most hosts live within a distance of 30 minutes by bus from the campus. Students should therefore expect to travel up to 30 minutes to reach the campus.
