Tips on Finding the Perfect Flatmates

  • Make sure you share similar interests
  • Do you have the same taste in music?
  • Do they like to play music loud, while you like to study in silence?
  • Are they willing to share the responsibility for cooking/cleaning?
  • Do they like to sleep earlier or later than you?
  • Are they a morning or night person?
  • How messy is there room? This is a good indication on how clean they will keep the rest of the flat.
  • Do they study the same programme as you? Maybe they are young professionals who work 8 hours a day.
  • Are they social people or do they prefer to keep to themselves?

These are just a few things to keep in mind as you will want to make sure whatever their lifestyle, that you can live with them.

Where Can I find a Good Flat?

  • If you have a group of people to flat with but need a flat, it is a good idea to check out "Properties for Rent" through TradeMe and filter the results so you only see the preferred number of bedrooms and rent prices. If you are looking for a place solo and want to move somewhere that is already established, check the "Flatmates wanted" section and filter the same way.
  • Check on notice boards around uni as lots of students advertise spare rooms in their flat around the campus to find likeminded students.
  • Supermarkets often have an advertisement board that you can check out also.
  • Social media is a great place to find flats, especially the local Wellington groups for flat finding.

How to set up a new flat

Once you have your new flatmates and have signed a lease for a flat, there are a number of useful things needed to set up the flat.

Bond
Bond is money that a landlord can ask tenants to pay as security when they move into a property. The Bond is held by Tenancy Services and can be used to cover unpaid rent, damage to the property or any claim relating to the tenancy. If you’re a tenant and you properly look after your property, and pay your rent in full, you should get your bond refunded after you move out.

Flat account
It is a good idea to set up a flat bank account when you move in together so it is easy to pay all the groceries and bills. Everyone can pitch in a certain amount per week and this gets distributed among the bills. Ensure everyone has their name on the account so you can all see the transactions going in and out.

Power/Gas
Before you move into a new flat, you will need to check whether it runs on electricity or gas, or both. To set up your power account, choose the best company and plan for your situation. Some companies offer free credit if a friend refers you.
Powerswitch is a great place to start comparing companies and finding the best prices in Wellington.

Internet
If you don't want to be spending every minute on campus, you'll be needing a reliable internet source. Depending on how much you use the internet for and how many people you are sharing it with, you may want to look into getting a plan that offers unlimited data.
Broadband Compare is a great starting point for finding the best deals in Wellington for internet, and seeing if you property can get Fibre!

Tips:

  • When setting up a power or internet account, usually they will only require one name to be on the bill. If it is your name being nominated, it will be your responsibility that it gets paid, so be aware of that. If payments are late, this can affect your credit rating which then affects your ability to get a financial loan later in life.
