How to receive your award

At the appropriate time, the College Pro Vice-Chancellor (or nominee) will announce the various degrees, diplomas and certificates. Recipients will be guided by an usher to the stage.

  • Those being 'capped' for the first time will carry their trencher in their left hand, with the tassel placed on the left side of the trencher, until 'capped' by the Chancellor.
  • Previously capped students: Wear your trencher during the procession and into the venue. However, as you leave your seat and approach the stage to have your award conferred you must then remove your trencher.

As you leave your seat and approach the stage, carry your trencher in your left hand and move to the top of the stairs.

As the College Pro Vice-Chancellor (or nominee) calls each name, that person will approach the stage and stand directly before the Chancellor:

  • for Certificate and Diploma recipients - the Chancellor will shake hands.
  • for Graduands - the Chancellor will ceremoniously cap the graduand by holding a ceremonial trencher over their head, and shake hands. The graduate then puts on their own trencher or bonnet (held in left hand).
  • for Diplomates - the Chancellor will shake hands. The diplomate then puts on their trencher (held in left hand) after shaking hands with the Chancellor.

All recipients and graduates then cross to receive their scroll from the Campus Registrar, taking it in their right hand. Recipients will be guided by an usher to their seats. Wear your trencher or bonnet for the remainder of the ceremony, until after you are outside the venue.
