Philosophy

Te Uru Karaka Kōhanga Reo was established in 1998 in response to the demand from Māori Massey University staff and students in Palmerston North for a university based total immersion Kōhanga Reo.

The Mission of the Te Uru Karaka Kōhanga Reo is to protect our proud and esteemed language, ngā tikanga, me ngā āhuatanga Māori by targeting the participation of mokopuna and whānau.

Through the immersion of Te Reo, tikanga me ngā āhuatanga Māori Te Uru Karaka Kōhanga Reo aims to provide tamariki with knowledge and skills appropriate to their level of development, in addition acknowledging their physical and emotional well being essential to their intellectual and creative development.

The quality of learning and development of mokopuna stems from the collective strength of the whānau, the use of language both inside and outside of Kohanga Reo, whanaungatanga, relationship management, whānau learning, and whānau decision-making. Te Uru Karaka Kohanga Reo aims to strengthen the whānau within Te Ao Māori which will enhance whānau and mokopuna development.
