Career and Employment Service - recession recruitment
Introduction
The current global recession sharpens the focus on value for money. It has rarely been more crucial for business to recruit and retain the right people for the job. If you are in the business of recruiting graduates, or are thinking of doing so, this article offers advice on recruiting through recession.
The case for continuing with graduate recruitment
It’s possible that you’ll have to justify the value of graduate recruitment to your colleagues and management. Here are some ways in which you might do so:
- Ceasing or reducing any graduate intake impacts on the flow of talent in your organisation - there’s a risk of stagnation of new ideas and talents.
- You may be risking time, money and effort already spent on advertising, selection and training and development
- Succession planning can be affected for years to come. As the economy improves, will you have the right people in place to grow your business?
- The public relations impact of withdrawing from the market cannot be underestimated. It can take significant money, time and effort to re-establish a reputation as an employer of choice.
Given the above, it will be useful to maintain some graduate recruitment activity and/or to stay connected with the Massey campuses.
Staying connected with us
The Career and Employment Service offers a range of cost-effective ways to become - or remain - connected to talented, motivated students and recent graduates.
Recruiting?
The vacancy system NZUniCareerHub has been developed by the University Careers Advisers of New Zealand (UCANZ) with the support of seven of the eight New Zealand universities and is a relatively economic way of accessing a pool of talented job seekers. It makes it simpler for employers to promote vacancies targeted to university students and graduates.
Note that we are keen to publicise all types of job opportunity - graduate employment but also vacation work; voluntary work; contracting and placements and internships.
Where it’s impossible for you to offer full-time, permanent work other forms of employment can be a fruitful way to get work done and to get to know potential recruits for the economic upturn.
Other ways of connecting?
Here is an outline of some of the other ways to connect, or to keep connected, with Massey’s student and graduate talent pool. Your involvement in any or all of these will be noted by our tutors and lecturers - some of the people with the most influence on students and graduates.
Where you have Massey graduates working for you already, they can be great ambassadors for your organisation - any may be great sources of advice and contacts for your connections with the university.
Furthermore, in the interests of value for money you may want to explore working with others in your sector on some of the suggestions that follow:
Information sessions - Allow you to present information to a targeted group of students to profile your organisation. We can assist with publicising your session; advising on the timing of it; targeting your information to the appropriate audience; booking rooms and audio visual equipment that meets your requirements (subject to availability) and arranging any catering that you would like to provide.
Finally
Remember that we are here to help. If you’d like more information on any of the above, or would like to explore further how we might work together simply get in touch with us.
