Career and Employment Service – helping prospective Massey students

Introduction

Although it may seem a long, long way away you will, as a Massey graduate, have a wide range of career options.  We can help you to explore these in depth or to work towards any career plans that you have already made.

Firstly though, we’d like to say congratulations for accessing this site.  It is never too early to start your career planning and here you’ll find tools are resources to help you with this.

We understand that you are investing a large amount of time and money in your tertiary studies.  Also, that you may be doing so to enhance your career prospects.  As a result we and the wider university place great emphasis on supporting you to succeed at Massey and to realise your career goals.

Massey University – the engine of the new New Zealand

Massey is looking for keen and clever students to join the Engine of the new New Zealand. They are individuals who are striving to be brilliant at what they do - those who want to become Defining People that make a difference.

  • Keen to join them?  Then find out more here.

Issues to consider

There are many reasons why people want to study at university. The most common include enhancing career prospects; following a passion for a subject; tapping into new experiences and seeking challenges.  Coupled with this are the desire to work alongside people with shared interests; a keeness to meet new people and an interest in developing new skills and in growing personally and professionally.

Setting a goal for your studies will help you to stay motivated while studying. The best results are often obtained if you study something that you find interesting. We recommend that you:

  • Consider your interests and what you like doing
  • Research your course and career options
  • Remember that, like many, your goals may change
  • Ask for our help with anything you are unsure about

Your time at Massey is most likely to be successful and enjoyable if you have clear goals.  The links that follow will take you to resources that will help you:

The issues that we can help with include (but are not limited to):

1.jpg  Choosing a career – What issues should you consider? What options do you have that relate to the subjects that interest you?  How to analyse your skills, interests, values and personality.

2.jpg  Researching what is out there – What do particular careers involve?  What do employers expect?  Information on the labour market.  Exploring organisations and employment sectors.

3.jpg  Taking action – Accessing job vacancies and the hidden job market.  How to draft a CV and cover letter and complete application forms.  Dealing with interviews.  Negotiating with employers.  Marketing yourself effectively for work

We have staff on each of Massey’s campuses and can offer you one-to-one advice in a face-to-face capacity; by telephone or email or by webcam (through Skype).

  • Find out here how to contact us
