Blues Awards Criteria and Nominations/Applications

Massey University Blues

Massey University Blues Awards are presented to students in recognition of their outstanding achievements in both sport and academic studies. Nominations closed on 18th August for the 2017 awards. Awards functions will be held in October in Palmerston North and Auckland.

Sport Criteria for a Massey University Blue

  • The qualifying period for sporting achievements is the season from September 2016 - August 2017.
  • Excellence of play and sportsmanship.
  • Exceptional merit or honour in the particular sport concerned, as displayed in open competition at regional, national or international events during the qualifying period.

Academic Criteria for a Massey University Blue

  • The academic qualifying period for a 2017 Blue is from 1 July 2016 -30 June 2017.
  • All applicants must be enrolled and pursuing a qualification at Massey University or completing a degree or diploma during the academic qualifying period.
  • All Applicants must have gained a successful pass in a minimum of 45 credits over the period of the qualifying academic year.

Massey Sports Team Awards

These awards recognise outstanding performance by a Massey University Team (Mens & Womens) who have performed outstandingly during the year September 2016 - August 2017.

The team captain or a team member can nominate their team. However the Blues Committee will review all team performances, including those teams who participated at the New Zealand University Games.

Team applications must complete sections 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 and complete the personal contact details.

Criteria for a Massey Team Award

  • Teams should be 75% current Massey University students or students who have graduated within the qualifying period. (List of players must be supplied)
  • Level at which the team is competing (page group, development, open/senior)
  • Team unity, commitment, pride and demonstration of fair-play will also be taken into consideration.
  • Contribution to Massey University Club Sport.

MU Sportsman & Sportswoman of the Year Awards

MU presents a Campus Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Award at both the Manawatu and Auckland campuses. These awards go to the Blues recipients who, in the opinion of the panel, have performed most outstandingly at their sport and met the academic criteria requirements during the year in question.

Distance Sportsperson of the Year Award

Massey University presents a Distance Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Award at either the Manawatu or Auckland campus event (depending on the locality of the winner). This award goes to the Blues recipient who, in the opinion of the panel, has demonstrated excellent sporting achievements during the year in question and has achieved excellent academic grades. Students studying via distance through Massey University are eligible for consideration of this award.

Massey University Outstanding Contribution Award

Exceptional contribution over an extended period, towards administration or support of a particular sport activity or club/society, including areas such as coaching, fundraising management, administration or other supporting roles.

UTSNZ Awards

A New Zealand University Blue is the highest sporting accolade in the New Zealand tertiary system. If you received a Massey University Blue in 2016, an application for a UTSNZ Blue will automatically be put forward on your behalf by Massey University in January 2017, providing your sport achievements meet the national qualifying standards, as detailed here.

Criteria For NZU Blue

  • Students must be enrolled at a NZ University or have graduated one year prior to the presentation of the award,
  • Have paid students association/university fees,
  • Be a competing member of a university club where possible,
  • Have passed the national qualifying standard set by the national sports organisation.

In addition students must pass at least one third of a full time course at University. (For this reason the nominees recommended for an award by the NZU Blues Panel are not confirmed until eligibility and academic checks have been completed.)
