Manawatahi (Māori Students Association)

Manawatahi is the Māori Students' Association at Massey University's Manawatu campus in Palmerston North. Defined as a whānau made up of students who identify themselves as Māori, their mission statement is:

To provide a culturally safe environment for Māori students to fulfil their potential within Massey University, Manawatu campus.

To acknowledge the Tiriti O Waitangi as a founding document of Aotearoa and tino rangatiratanga - move toward autonomy.

Manawatahi is an organisation that represents and advocates on behalf of Māori students during their time of study. Weekly hui-ā-whānau are held to discuss issues relevant to Māori students. While participation is not compulsory, it’s a good opportunity to keep you up to date with what’s happening and kōrero with various whānau. Information or advice on most student issues can be obtained through Kaitiaki Tari or Te Rōpū Whāiti. This includes Māori student mentoring programmes and study groups, scholarships and grants, health issues, student counselling, and support. Funding is available to support and encourage initiatives and ideas that promote Māori students and their study.

Te Rōpū Whāiti

Te Rōpū Whāiti is the executive committee of Manawatahi, and manages its varying aspects. Committee members are elected volunteers from within the rōpū who are responsible for the day-to-day running of the organisation.

Positions include:

Kaiwhakahaere

Providing advocacy and representation for Māori students by liaising between various groups on behalf of the Manawatahi whānau, and, providing leadership.

Kaitakawaenga

Responsible for retaining partnerships and communication flows between MUSA and Manawatahi and Mana Irirangi (Radio Control).

Kaitiaki Tari

Kaiāwhina

Kaitaiki Pūtea

Takes care of all financial aspects of Manawatahi.

Kaiminiti

  • Te Kohinga (CHAFF)
  • Events
