Manawatahi (Māori Students Association)
Manawatahi is the Māori Students' Association at Massey University's Manawatu campus in Palmerston North. Defined as a whānau made up of students who identify themselves as Māori, their mission statement is:
To provide a culturally safe environment for Māori students to fulfil their potential within Massey University, Manawatu campus.
To acknowledge the Tiriti O Waitangi as a founding document of Aotearoa and tino rangatiratanga - move toward autonomy.
Manawatahi is an organisation that represents and advocates on behalf of Māori students during their time of study. Weekly hui-ā-whānau are held to discuss issues relevant to Māori students. While participation is not compulsory, it’s a good opportunity to keep you up to date with what’s happening and kōrero with various whānau. Information or advice on most student issues can be obtained through Kaitiaki Tari or Te Rōpū Whāiti. This includes Māori student mentoring programmes and study groups, scholarships and grants, health issues, student counselling, and support. Funding is available to support and encourage initiatives and ideas that promote Māori students and their study.
