Uppsala University - Uppsala Universitet, Sweden
Uppsala is the oldest university in the Nordic countries, founded in 1477. Its ancient traditions, advanced knowledge and extensive experience provide a firm foundation for today. Uppsala has nurtured students to become Nobel Prize winners, and lays claim to nine winners in the field of science.
Presently, there are about 40,000 undergraduate and 3,000 postgraduate students studying at the University. Uppsala University offers a wide range of courses taught in English, and every year also offers Swedish language courses for exchange students.
The city of Uppsala is about 2 hours by train from Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. It is a student-oriented city, with plenty of clubs, cultural activities and festivals.
Credit System
At Uppsala University, students generally take one course at a time, with each course running for a short period of time. A full time course load consists of 30 credits per semester. Usually courses are worth 7.5 credits each, and run for five weeks, so usually you will take four papers per semester.
Grades are normally awarded on a basis of "pass with distinction", "pass", or "fail".
All courses include written and/or oral examinations. There are, however, usually no final exams covering the entire semester's coursework or covering an entire general study programme.
Course Codes
Uppsala does not teach courses by year level, but rather sequentially, taking into account what courses have been taken before.
Courses with an A level are introductory courses; B and C are more advanced, and D course are postgraduate level. However, as the year system does not technically apply, your eligibility for any given course relies solely on what papers you have taken previously. It is therefore important to read through the course pre-requisites to see if you have the background knowledge necessary for a particular course.
Academic Calendar
The academic year consists of two semesters, an autumn/fall semester and a spring semester. The autumn semester begins late August and ends in mid-January; the spring semester begins mid-January and ends early June. Students are expected to arrive at the University approximately one week before classes begin for the compulsory orientation.
Swedish Language Course
Exchange students from Massey can access the free Intensive Swedish language course held at the beginning of the autumn semester. Students wishing to take advantage of this course should arrive late July. Spaces are limited.
In addition to the Intensive language course there are basic language courses held during the semester. Application and registration for the course is offered on arrival.
