The University of Limerick (UL) was established in 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick and classified as the University of Limerick in 1989. The University of Limerick offers a range of programmes up to doctoral and postdoctoral levels in the disciplines of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Business, Education and Health Sciences, Science and Engineering.
The University is situated on a superb riverside campus of over 133 hectares with the River Shannon as a unifying focal point. Outstanding recreational, cultural and sporting facilities further enhance this exceptional learning and working environment. The University of Limerick campus is located 5km from Limerick City and 2km from Shannon International Airport.
The Erasmus+ scholarship
The Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility provides funding for students to study at Limerick for one semester from Semester 1 2020 through Semester 1 2022. Academic merit is the main criteria for selection. Preference is given to students who experience fewer international opportunities.
The programme provides a €1,500 Travel Grant and a monthly grant of €900. You can use the current exchange rate to see how these amounts convert from Euros to NZD.
The scholarship winners will sign a learning agreement and contract in order to receive the funds. On arrival in Ireland, the recipients will need to open a bank account to receive the grant payments. At the end of the semester, the recipients will be required to complete a short final report about the exchange.
Credit system
The normal course load at the University of Limerick is 5 modules per semester. Exchange students are limited to a maximum of 5 modules and a minimum of 4 modules per semester. Each course is awarded 6 ECTS credits. Each course has 3-6 contact hours per week.
Courses
There are a range of courses available from the Kemmy Business School and the Faculty of Education and Health Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering and Science.
The University of Limerick has been particularly popular with Massey Food Technology students in the past.
Accommodation
UL students can choose to live on campus in one of the six student villages or off campus in private student accommodation or self-catering houses and apartments.
Visas
New Zealand passport holders do not need a visa to enter Ireland. However, they will need to register with the Gardai (Irish police) upon arrival.
Insurance
All students are required to obtain private health insurance either from institutions in their home countries or from institutions in Ireland.
