Genealogy and family history are my passion.

I'm actively researching these people at present. Please email me if you have similar interests. I now have many resources for these surnames and places which I'm willing to share with others for their private research.

In 2000 I wrote Hudson - From Thames to Thames chronicling the descendants of Thomas Haigh Hudson and Sophia Halliday Boyle, largely in New Zealand. Copies can still be obtained from me for cost of production - $25 per copy.

Thomas Haigh Hudson came from an old Worcestershire Hudson family. I have since learned a lot more of the history of Thomas Haigh Hudson's family and his mother Juliana Claridge's family back in England.

Sophia Halliday Boyle was of Irish origins, her mother's family, the Campbells, having travelled much by sea.

An earlier production was Hancock Heritage (1986), a record of the descendants of Thomas Hancock from Gloucestershire and his two wives, Mary Allsop and Elizabeth Bourton. Both wives died in Gloucestershire and the widowed Thomas came to New Zealand bringing most of his family with him.

His eldest son Thomas Hancock stayed behind in England with his wife Emily Ford and a growing family for about 10 years before following his father to New Zealand.

Again I have copies available for sale at cost - $25 per copy. Also available to relatives is a partial list of events which have happened since 1986.  I am always pleased to add new information to this list.

Also available (in some cases) are books written by my father, Lloyd Cleland, about the Cleland family in New Zealand.

  • "The Clelands of Loudoun, South Canterbury, New Zealand and Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland"
This covers the descendants of Andrew Cleland and Margaret Gardiner who married in New Zealand in 1872, and gives some of the early knowledge of Andrew's relatives back in Ayrshire, Scotland.
  • "Peter Hunter and Agnes Cleland and their descendants"
Agnes was a sister to Andrew Cleland (above) and her children came to New Zealand in the 1880s.
  • "Robert Gardiner and Jean Page Marchall and their descendants"
This covers the history of the family of this couple who married in Fifeshire, Scotland including numerous Claytons in New Zealand and David Gardiner who lived in Sydney.  It does not include the descendants of Margaret (who are recorded separately in the book above) .
  • "The Lawson Family Tree"
Covers 1766 to the present.  Lists ancestors  and descendants of James Lawson and Margaret Arthur who lived in Abdie, Fifeshire during the 19th century.  Included is Dunedin, New Zealand based 19th century architect, Robert Arthur Lawson.

And this book about my mother's forebears and relatives was written by a family committee that included my parents, but is now out of print.  Information is held by me about some events occurring since 1985.

  • "John and Mary Ann Campion and Descendants 1851 - 1985"
John Campion and Mary Ann Taylor came from Lincolnshire to New Zealand in 1851 and settled into the mid-Canterbury farming community.

John's brother Emblin also came to Canterbury.  I have some records of this family.
