    Early Crusader 1099 AD

This is the list Troy Adlington used at the Australian MOAB convention.  Historically this army formed up in four divisions with Bohemond as the reserve.  But then, historically Bohemond didn't face a 400 AP limit.

    Command 1

    Bohemond CinC, Reg Kn(F)
    8 Crossbowmen- Irr Bw(O)
    8 Foot Segeants- Irr Sp(I)

    3 Nefs- Shp(O)
    22 Equivalent Elements
    Command 2
Robert of Flanders Sub, Reg Kn(F)
    2 Milites- Reg Kn(F)
    10 Milites- Reg Bd(O)
    4 Foot Sergeants- Irr Sp(I)
    4 Archers- Irr Ps(O)
    8 Crossbowmen- Irr Ps(O)
    23 Equivalent Elements
    Command 3
Adhemar, Bishop of Le Puy Sub, Reg Kn(F)
    3 Milites- Reg Kn(F)
    8 Foot Segeants- Irr Sp(I)
    4 Archers- Irr Ps(O)
    8 Crossbowmen- Irr Bw(O)
    22 Equivalent Elements
Adhemar was responsible for the holy lance in 1098.  He did not survive the campaigns of this year.

    Tactical Notes:

    • Use the Spears as the mortar between the Blade and the Flank Bows.
    • The Spear can either support a heavy infantry attack with the blades or help the Bows fend off mounted.
    • Use the Ships to grab a WW [Waterway]...your army then stretches the table with all the Kn's in reserve

    • March up the table aggressively attack everywhere and be happy to trade losses, attrition is your friend with this army.

    Later Crusader 1140 AD

Fulk of Anjou and the Atabeg of Damascus (Muin ad Din) allied in 1140 to confront Zanghid aggression.  Robert de Craon "Burgundius" was the Master of the Templars and a supporter of Fulk.  Raymond of Poitiers was the Prince of Antioch but native-French.  He was also a supporter of Fulk.

    Command 1

Fulk of Anjou Irr Kn(F) CinC

The L Crusaders has several inherent problems.  The army has low aggression, no skirmishers- and its main combat troops are not agile.

This design tries to use a combination of size and 4 PIP dice to offset the low aggression and lack of agility.  The size requirement meant a pre-1150 option, with few military order components, was best.

The army tries to compensate for the lack of light troops with the Syrian ally and the abundant Bw.

Raymond's command (2) is deployed first, with Raymond dismounted as a Sp or Bd.  If Sp, he can be paired with the Sp(O) Sergeant.  On foot he is not subject to impetousity.  Muin ad-Din takes up a skirmishing position next to Raymond.  Fulk and Robert deploy in reserve.  All the Irr Kn are with Fulk- who can use his free CinC PIP to control them.

The reserves can be then readily redeployed to counter threats/exploit opportunities.

In the first outing of this army, it cleaned up an Andalusian opponent without loss.

"You have to break two commands to break the army and
considering their size that takes a while.  The support troops are tough enough that they can be used to apply extra pressure on the enemy.  Once the knights are in combat you can use most of your pips to manuever the supports into position to apply that extra pressure."- Pat Lewis.

    NOTES:

"The Bw(O) are quite useful rough going troops; using the two groups together to give a block of 10 with 2 commands PIPs sometimes works.  The Irr Ps(S) give you a bit of cover for difficult going.  The three knight commands can lose all their Kn without breaking." - Steve Sykes.

    NOTES:
"As a defender, I place my baggages next to the compulsory WW. As an  attacker, I place my baggages in the centre.  I place my troops in columns, outer columns the Bws, inner columns the Cv (but not in the centre, always at my best covered flank sector all of  them). I use the Ax and Ps to hold or capture RGo or DifGo.
The only troops I place frontally are the LH units. Then I pin down the enemy's strong soldiers and I attack fast with all of my troops to his weak command. However, the things are difficult, if the  battle takes long".
