Tiritiri Matangi Island

Tiritiri Matangi Island is located 30 km north east of central Auckland, and is one of New Zealand's most important and exciting conservation projects. The long history of farming saw this 220 ha island stripped of 94% of its native bush. Currently designated as a Scientific Open Sanctuary, the island's ecosytem restoration is a joint effort of the scientists, public and Department of Conservation. As a result the 60% of the island have been re-forested, pest eradicated and several native and also endangered animals (birds and reptiles) have been reintroduced.

Dolphin/ whale watch

The Hauraki Gulf is a shallow, semi-enclosed body of temperate water just north of Auckland city, on the east coast of North Island, New Zealand (Latitude 36o10' to 37o10'S: Longitude 174o40 to 175o30'E). Influenced by the subtropical East Auckland Current (EAUC), the Hauraki Gulf is an extremely productive region exhibiting a high diversity of biological fauna. Marine mammals occurring in this area include common dolphin and Bryde's whale. Occasionally, killer whale (orca) and bottlenose dolphins can also be observed in these waters. The area is also renowned for its bird species with Australasian gannets, Buller's shearwaters and white-fronted terns are frequently observed during trips. The region is a nursery for hammerhead sharks and a rife with various fish species including snapper, kingfish and jack mackerel.

Auckland Zoological Park has one of New Zealand's largest collection of animals. Visitors will have the opportunity to see many of New Zealand's native and iconic species up close. New Zealand Centre for Conservation Medicine (the first national centre for conservation medicine in the world) is also based at the Zoo.
