Personal InformationI am a proud father to Daniel Viehland. Daniel is a student and equality politics campaigner at the University of Montana in Missoula.
I am engaged to marry Jude (Judith Hoek). Jude lives in Takapuna, also on the North Shore, but we spend many weekday nights and all of our weekends together.
In my limited spare time I like to read (fiction), travel (mostly Asia) and tramp (mountains, streams, beaches and forests).
If you want to know more about me and my significant life experiences, check out my personal history.
Professional Information
I am an Associate Professor of Information Systems in the Department of Management (Albany) at Massey University's Auckland campus. I am also a campus leader in Massey University's MBA programme team.
If you want to know more about my employment history, publications, teaching experiences and other professional accomplishments check out my curriculum vitae. Otherwise, a brief description of my professional interests follows.
Research
My primary research area is mobile business -- how businesses use mobile computing to grow sales, provide better customer service, improve employee productivity, be more competitive and increase profits. This is part of a larger interest in ubiquitous computing, especially the opportunities offered to businesses as computing power becomes mobile, embedded, wearable and pervasive. My interest in mobile business naturally follows on from my long-term and continuing interest in electronic commerce and e-commerce strategy -- how do businesses develop and implement an initiative that allows them to compete effectively in the on-line world.
I also retain a long-term research interest in the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) to facilitate management of Information Age organisations. This includes research interests such as telework, distributed work, virtual organisations, technological levelling, business process management, co-opetition, hypercompetition, business sustainability in a flat world and, especially, Enterprise 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis, prediction markets and social networking.
Finally, many of my publications in enterprise systems and other areas can be attributed to encouraging and supporting my postgraduate and doctoral students to publish their research.
Teaching
My teaching responsibilities are principally in the area of postgraduate business research. In the 2010 academic year I teach:
Mobile Business (157.777) is a postgraduate course offered in block mode that introduces participants to the fundamental concepts, strategies and technologies associated with the implementation of mobile computing so they can play an active role in the development of mobile business opportunities in the organisations in which they work.
Information Systems Management (157.700) offers a comprehensive overview of the application of computing technology within organisations from a managerial perspective. The target audience is the manager who uses information and communication technologies daily, makes decisions about ICT and works with computing professionals, but who is not an ICT manager.
Information Technology and Electronic Commerce (115.743) is an elective in Massey University's MBA programme that offers a study of the nature and role of information and communication technologies in business. The course focuses on a state-of-the-art review of the use of information systems, issues and trends in business-related information technology, and the nature, purpose and evolution of e-business that increasingly shapes business strategy and operations.
Applied Business Research (115.735) serves two distinct needs: (a) to introduce MBA students to the use and conduct of research within modern business organisations and (b) to prepare MBA students for the research project to be conducted at the conclusion of their MBA coursework.
MBA Research Project (115.737) is the capstone course in Massey University's MBA degree. This 30-credit course allows MBA students to conduct a substantial research project on a topic of personal or professional interest to them. I coordinate 115.737 and I supervise a few of the research projects each year.
Executive and Professional Development Courses
I combine many of my research and teaching interests in executive development courses that I offer through various institutes and associations. In recent years I have conducted courses for Vodafone New Zealand, ANZ Bank, the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and the University of Auckland Executive Programmes Short Courses.
