    An Introduction to New Zealand's Agricultural Green House Gas Emissions and Management

    Developed in conjunction with DairyNZ, AgResearch, New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre and MPI, this course presents New Zealand’s agricultural GHG emissions in the context of their contribution to global emissions and climate change. An introductory understanding of the GHG source/sink from the carbon and nitrogen cycles in NZ farming systems is developed, with an emphasis on pastoral and forestry systems.  The online study material, short course presentations and use of Overseer Nutrient budgeting software will introduce the practitioner to the skills required to develop emissions reduction plans for actual pastoral farming enterprises.

    Intermediate Freshwater Farm Planning

    Developed with the support of the Fertiliser Association of New Zealand (FANZ), this course is designed for industry professionals interested in upskilling in the concepts and components important for the development of Freshwater Farm Environment Plans. Students will examine the purpose of a Freshwater Farm Plan with respect to government policies and acquaint themselves with systems used to classify landscape units, different types of soil erosion, sources of sediment, nutrient and pathogen loss, and options available to mitigate these losses. Students will be introduced to spatial mapping of the relevant physical features and observed soil erosion, sediment, nutrient and pathogen loss issues through virtual field trips which will be integrated throughout the course. Students will demonstrate their acquired knowledge and skills in the form of a desktop Freshwater Farm Plan report.

    Advanced Freshwater Farm Planning

    Developed with the support of the Fertiliser Association of New Zealand (FANZ), this course will provide students with the detailed knowledge and integrated skills necessary to produce New Zealand industry-standard, farm-scale, Freshwater Farm Plans for dairy, beef and sheep and arable farms. These plans will identify existing and potential soil, greenhouse gas, pathogen, and nutrient loss pathways, the sources of these losses, and will provide justification for a range of options to mitigate the impact of the farm system on freshwater bodies.

    Developed with the support of the Fertiliser Association of New Zealand (FANZ), this course is offered to introduce participants to the scale and operation of agriculture and its importance within New Zealand, provide a framework for appreciating ‘systems’, along with an understanding of major drivers that have, and will continue to, shape New Zealand agricultural systems.

    Understanding Herbicides

    This 3-day Professional Development Course is designed primarily as a stand-alone course to give participants a good grounding in the principles of using herbicides to control weeds. It has been designed to prepare participants for working in the herbicide industry within New Zealand, but is also useful for people working in agriculture, horticulture and regional councils who need to control weeds with herbicides as part of their job.

    Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment

    This course will introduce you to life cycle thinking as a concept, and Life Cycle Assessment as an analytical tool to support environmental management. By the end of this course, you will be able to confidently commission an LCA study designed to meet the needs of a specific decision situation and be able to interpret its results to support decision-making. This course is intended for environmental managers, product designers, engineers, policymakers and other professionals interested in learning more about the role of LCA in guiding decision-making - but without any prior training in LCA.
