Introduction

Hopefully this page will collate most of my teaching material. The material is split 50/50 between lectures from my days at the University of Sussex and current lecture material from here (Massey University if you got to this page some odd way).

The Massey material is here because every time I manage to figure out whatever online learning tool we are using they go and change it. I'm an old dog, these things are new tricks...I just can't do it so I keep things simple (and here).

The main reason I continue to host the Sussex material is simply because it seems a shame to leave it festering in some draw (or whatever the electronic equivalent is).

I have to humbly apologise for the use of a number of images without permission; these are of course copyright of their respective owners and will be removed on request.

All feedback is greatly appreciated...(even negative I think)

The courses

Chemistry through the looking glass
This is a new version of a talk I have given to a couple of high schools. It has been re-jigged to stand alone on the web and is really a bit of an experiment to see what I can do with SlideShare (and whether I should all my lectures on it). Hope someone enjoys it or finds it useful.

Chemistry and living systems
1st year lectures for 123.101 Unit 1. The new (and improved?) version of the slides are now available through SlideShare.net. I will leave the old versions as well, which count as the notes for the time being, as the new ones are more a prop for my lectures...

Chemistry and living systems
1st year lectures for 123.101 Unit 1 (vintage 2007). Obviously, this just includes gjr's overheads and no one elses's (hopefully that is the correct punctuation).

Organic and biological chemistry
2nd year lectures from 123.202. These are annotated notes based on gjr's 6 lectures.

123.202: Organic and biological chemistry: alkenes, dienes and alkynes
2nd year lectures from the second half of my 123.202 contribution. These are just the lecture slides; annotated notes may become available eventually but they might not.

Functional group interconversions 123.312
3rd year lecture notes for the 8 lectures given by gjr on, guess what, functional group interconversions.

Retrosynthesis 123.312
3rd year lecture notes for the 6 lectures given by gjr on retrosynthesis.

Retrosynthesis Interactive pdf
This links to an interactive pdf file created to help with retrosynthesis (as taught in 123.312).

Advanced organic chemistry 123.713
Honours class lectures on asymmetric synthesis and total synthesis. This course replaces the stereoselective synthesis course below. I have cut the asymmetric synthesis content down from 12 lectures to 6 and add 4 lectures on total synthesis. As such, it should be a bit more general and a bit more fun. At the moment I have only put my slides up on the web; eventually I'll put notes up for the course (or at least an annotated version of slides so that they can become 'stand alone' and won't need my spiel).

Advanced organic chemistry 123.713AB
The new version of 123.713. Honours class lectures on asymmetric synthesis and total synthesis. This course replaces 123.713 above. This version includes cut down lectures (only 4), more problems and tutorial sheets (and answers), and a link to the fabled annotated version of the slides from the course above (only took 3-4 years to get them online!).

Introduction to organic and bioorganic molecules and reactions
1st year lectures; and the worlds longest title (not of my choosing I hasten to add).

Strategy in Synthesis
2nd year course revising useful reactions (1/2 course).

Stereoselective synthesis (draft 1)
MChem and PG course; this is the early draft that I gave at Sussex (its not the best in the world).

Stereoselective synthesis
The new and hopefully improved version - still needs a little editing (& finishing).

Oxidation and Reduction
Old PG lectures on various oxidation and reducing reagents.

Retrosynthesis
Even older PG course on retrosynthesis.

Advanced synthesis
Another old (1/2) course on various strategies in synthesis; has its moments.
