Assessing Hazards and Hazard Control Plans

Assessing Hazards - Risk Assessments

  • For every potentially hazardous activity, it is necessary to identify and assess hazards. To do this risk assessment, complete a Hazard Management Form. These must be completed for any of the following:
    • any new or developing methods you are working on
    • any established methods you’re working on where no RA has been completed previously
    • any equipment/chemicals you’re working with or responsible for
    • If training staff or students on equipment in any lab use the hazard management form for the basis of this training and ensure the training is recorded (Red Safety Folder).

  • If a significant hazard is identified – that is, if there is any chance of a serious harm injury – complete a Hazard Control Plan

  • Forms available at links above or at http://hrs.massey.ac.nz/hs-forms.php3

  • Some templates for common equipment are on the shared drive (see Hazards folder in the Safety folder). These can be downloaded and put into red folders.
