Abstract

Visualising real and complex field variables can be a useful aid to debugging and understanding time evolutionary behaviour of computer simulation models that are based upon partial differential equations (PDEs). Various techniques exist for ``flying through'' real number field data in three dimensions but as well as reviewing these, we present some techniques for studying fields of complex number data and vector fields in both two and three dimensions. We consider volume rendering techniques as well as embedded surface extraction and rendering. We present some application examples and implementations using Graphical Processing Units(GPUs) and other specialist processing devices with associated concurrent software approaches that support interactive-time simulation and visualisation. We also discuss visualisation of Fourier-transformed data fields and some techniques for analysing and interpreting them.

Keywords: field; equation; complex field; vector field; visualization; rendering.
