Artificial intelligence (AI) within the movie and game world is quite distinct from the field of AI that we know from academia. The intention of this paper is to give the reader an overview of the unique roles that AI has played for animated characters, and to show how the AI behaviours and the technology driving them have developed over the last 20 years as hardware and software environments have become increasingly more powerful and complex. The study covers: path-finding searches, some motion techniques, "real-time"/realism (fitting into CPU cycles), level of detail techniques, game-playing "bots". Important goals are the suspension of disbelief and challenging human game players. A review of the state-of-the-art and some landmark movies and games is presented.
