Beyond Duluth

The following report, published in 2000, shows that the New Zealand public sector is aware of more complex analyses of abuse than that underpinning the Duluth approach. Nevertheless, there is still a strong emphasis on the Duluth approach in New Zealand policies on family violence.

Familial caregiver's physical abuse and neglect of children : a literature review.

The literature review that forms the basis of this report was prepared by Kay Saville-Smith, Centre for Research, Evaluation and Social Assessment. This report was produced jointly by Child, Youth and Family and the Ministry of Social Policy under the auspices of the Children, Young Persons, and the Families Act Research and Evaluation Fund Management Committee.

Published by the Ministry of Social Policy, 2000.

Note from the foreword:

"The review provides a detailed account of the characteristics and circumstances that can inform our understanding of physical abuse and neglect by familial caregivers. It identified a significant shift towards multidimensional explanations that include complex interactions among individuals, families, communities and cultural systems and concluded that treatment and prevention services need to reflect such complexities."
