Systems ecology, sustainability, and land use change

Last updated: March 14, 2011

This research focuses on using quantitative techniques to study the interactions between ecological systems and our economic activities, and the exchange in energy and matter between ecosystems and their environment. Emphasis here is placed on an interdisciplinary approach. This research utilizes several modelling tools for its implementation. Examples include: sustainability assessment at the farm and catchment level by applying the paradigm of strong (biophysical) sustainability; energy and carbon accounting (combined with other environmental indicators such as nutrient loading, biodiversity, water quality, etc.); large-scale chages in water balance.
