The scholarships come from a successful Marsden Fund application. Marsden Fund is one of most prestigious research grants in New Zealand. The project title is “No Longer Lost in Recognition: Development of Novel LargeVocabulary Continuous Speech Recognition Techniques”.

The principle investigator, project leader, the main supervisor of the students, Dr Ruili Wang, has supervised 8 PhD to completion in varied AI related areas including one in speech processing. The strong project team, the co-supervisors, includes renowned scientists in speech processing from Carnegie Mellon University and Kyoto University.

The three available student positions investigating various aspects of speech recognition:

·       Developing novel acoustic and language modelling methods

·       Developing robust speaker adaptation methods

·       Developing techniques for spontaneous speech recognition

Candidates need to meet the following criteria:

·       Requirements for PhD enrolment at Massy University

·       Excellent academic record

·       Strong background in mathematics, AI and programming

·       Knowledge in speech processing and machine learning is plus

·       Creative thinking skills and good writing skills are required
