The gathering will look at how community groups can continue to develop restorative justice, and examine ownership of restorative justice, national guidelines, and promoting the needs of restorative justice community groups.

Groups and individuals wanting to begin the debate for next year's meeting are encouraged to share their thoughts in brief papers. Papers (of up to 2 pages) should be sent by November 30 to Dr. Warwick Tie, Centre for Justice and Peace Development, Massey University, Private Bag 102 904, North Shore Mail Centre, or e-mailed to Dr. Warwick Tie.

Underpinning definition of Restorative Justice

Restorative justice is a community-based process that offers an inclusive way of dealing with offenders and victims of crime through a facilitated conference. Restorative conferencing brings victims into the heart of the criminal justice process, and provides encouragement for offenders to take personal responsibility for their offending, the opportunity for the healing of victims and offenders to commence, and where appropriate, the application of more practical and helpful sanctions. It is a procedure which focuses on accountability and repairing the damage done by crime rather than on retribution and punishment. Restorative justice processes create the possibility of reconciliation through the practice of compassion, healing, mercy and forgiveness.
