Introduction

Welcome. This site has been created to give academic staff an environment in which to explore information and resources related to teaching and learning online. There is a vast collection of material related to this topic on the World Wide Web. This site enables you to access some of those resources speedily, and is intended to function as a "self-help" guide for those of you who are putting course material (or entire courses) online.

Presenting teaching material and working with students online requires more than simply "shoveling" your course notes onto the web. As you browse through the topic areas here, you will be encouraged to consider issues as they relate to your specific teaching requirements ("Points to ponder"). You will also have the opportunity to share your online teaching and learning experiences with others.

Specifically, familiarisation with the material in the site will enable you to:

  • develop a clear rationale for putting your material or course on the web.
  • plan to ensure you are meeting the needs of your learners in the online environment.
  • design course content for effective presentation on the web.
  • develop strategies for working with groups of students online which enhance participation, collaboration, and interaction.
  • build up a set of on and off-line resources related to learning online.
  • know who you can call upon for support in this process.
  • share your own ideas and experiences, related to learning and teaching online.

As Massey University uses WebCT as its tool for development and delivery of course material, you will find references and links to WebCT examples throughout the site.

Using the resource

The following list outlines what you can expect to find in each of the topic areas. They are designed to be used non-sequentially:

Planning: why go online; knowing your learners; media selection; different styles for different disciplinary areas; approaches to teaching; accommodating learning styles;familiarisation with WebCT.

Design Tips: organising content; creating a welcome page; aims and objectives; page design; navigation; understanding HTML; designing with WebCT.

Teaching Online: facilitating participation; collaborative tasks;developing and maintaining interaction; discussion boards; feedback; activities; assessment; using the WebCT environment.

Resources: on and off-line resources related to each topic area; checklists; FAQ's; copyright; WebCT examples and resources.

Support: who to contact at Massey and WebCT support.

Using WebCT: Frequently Asked Questions about using WebCT, including an online form to request a new WebCT course.

Ask others: Tell others: the Massey campuses are spread far and wide - and even on your own campus you do not always get the chance to find about the new initiatives of your colleagues. This is an online forum (utilising WebCT) for finding out what has and hasn't worked for others, and for sharing your own ideas, experiences and questions. Throughout the site you will be invited to make contributions to the forum on a variety of topics. Please don't be constrained by the topic starters - feel free to share whatever you feel is important. Just make sure you place your message in the appropriate section and give it a descriptive title. The forum will be moderated by (insert).

Note:The forum is password protected. Massey staff, use your WebCT password to access. Visitors who are interested in contributing to this section, please contact t.j.h.billany@massey.ac.nz

Site evaluation: in order for this resource to meet your needs, we need your feedback. This is an online evaluation form which enables you to easily let us know of any additional resources you think would be beneficial to include, or other areas you would like to see explored.

The "Points to Ponder..." questions which prompt you to think about your own use of the web environment for teaching, are compiled for printing in pdf format in the resources section.

A major impetus for the development of the site is the geographical spread of Massey staff throughout the North Island. Many of you are already using the web in exciting ways to support your teaching. The "Ask others: Tell others" part of the site is your opportunity to share those developments. Be bold and submit your ideas and thoughts!
