Institute of Information and Mathematical Sciences

The Institute is broad-based and covers an extensive range of disciplines within the information, mathematical and related engineering sciences. The following core disciplines are represented within the Institute:

Computer Science : The design and analysis of all aspects of computer systems including hardware, operating systems, networks, software engineering, together with computer applications and underlying fundamental theory.

Information Technology : The Information Technology programme emphasises the real-world application of computer-based systems, and the tools and processes used to build them. You could choose, as many do, to study Information Technology together with other areas such as Accountancy, Computer Science, Finance, Geography, Planning, Management or Statistics. We encourage you to study Information Technology along with another specialisation.

Mathematics : The underpinning of the fundamental basis of Computer Science and Statistics as well as providing scientific models of all real-life processes involving quantity and measurement. A focus on applied mathematical modelling with applications to the physical and engineering sciences.

Statistics : The design of surveys and experiments to gather information, extraction of information through data analysis, construction and application of models of real-life processes which entail uncertainty, and inference techniques to make decisions and predictions with measurable precision.

The Institute places an emphasis on the development of interdisciplinary programmes integrating the key component disciplines such as networks and communications, computational science, datamining, and operations research.
