Newtown library's hours to be extended on a Saturday

Newtown library is set to be open until 4pm on Saturdays starting July 1.

The city strategy committee has recommended a trial to increase Saturday  hours by two after an E-petition calling for the library to open longer on Saturdays.

Councillor Malcolm Sparrow said, “I agree libraries are important community hubs.” But he wasn’t certain that the 66 signatures indicated a strong enough need for the hours to be extended.

Bernard O’Shaughnessy, who presented the petition, said  the general person wouldn’t know the petition existed: They don’t look at the website, they don’t see the petition.”

O’Shaughnessy said the library was one of few public spaces available in Newtown. “We don’t have many public buildings, the library is hugely essential.”

The councilors agreed the trial would be in conjunction with the wider plan for Wellington libraries.

A process for reviewing the library strategy in time for the 2021/3 Long Term Plan will be outlined in a paper to be presented to the committee in August.
