More Books on BONUS+

by Massey University Library Email

BONUS+
BONUS+ now gives you free access to books from eight major Australian University Libraries, with a ninth due to join up in August. That's 4.5 million books to choose from.

Try these searches to get an idea of the possibilities...

  • 'facebook' in Massey's Encore catalogue gives 16 results (at the time of writing this)
  • 'facebook' in BONUS+ gives 55 results (maybe more by the time you read this) - and you can request any of the available ones for free.

It's very easy to search BONUS+ from within Massey's catalogues. Just search Encore or our classic Library Catalogue as usual, then if the title or topic you want is not available – either because we don’t own it, or it is out on loan – click on the BONUS+ button on the same page to automatically search the shared Catalogue. Or alternatively, search the BONUS+ Catalogue directly for your title or topic.

Requested items usually arrive here in 7-10 days. Books are issued for 21 days, and may be renewed once if not required by another borrower. Staff and postgraduate students can have up to 10 BONUS+ items requested/issued at once, and undergraduate students up to 5 items.

Visit the Library Catalogue for more information on BONUS+ and how to use it.

Referencing Tip

by Massey University Library Email

Not sure about APA referencing for your assignment? The Library for Undergraduates page now has a quick link to APA Interactive (under 'Other Useful Massey Links'). This easy-to-use tool creates customised examples of APA references and in-text citations. It's created by the team at Massey's OWLL (Online Writing & Learning Link). We've found it really useful in the Library for referencing queries, so we've made it easier to find from the Library website.
If you're using another style or getting beyond the basics, we also have links to other Referencing and Style Guides, or you may be interested in EndNote bibliographic management software.

Encore Upgrade

by Massey University Library Email

Encore - that's the Google-style version of the Catalogue with a search box on the Library home page - has had an update. The new features you might be interested in are:

  • Availability: on the left of the search results, this narrows the results down to items that are at the Library right now, available for borrowing.
  • Place: also on the left but further down the page, Place limits the results to items that focus on a specific country.
  • Related Searches: sitting below the results with a link just under the search box, Related Searches carries out a whole new search on a subject heading similar to your current search. Note that Related Searches is for new searches, while the tag cloud (on the right) which looks very similar, modifies your current search.

Please contact us if you need help with any of these new features.

Scopus Update

by Massey University Library Email

Scopus

This is a reminder, if you haven't already done so, to check out this new-ish database. First introduced to Massey in 2008, it has been growing in popularity. Many people have told us that they are finding more quality articles on their topics using Scopus than on other databases we hold.

Scopus is a very large multidisciplinary database, covering most subject areas very well. One exception unfortunately is the humanities which are still best served by other databases.

Scopus is a very powerful tool for examining the relationships between articles. Like Web of Science, you can see an article's references, who has cited it, and similar articles (based on references in common). However, in Scopus, the layout of references in particular is very straightforward, with links to those articles (if available) and the number of times they have been cited. Great for exploring the literature!

If you are already familiar with Scopus, you will be pleased to know that they have improved their search interface. Instead of being limited to two search boxes, you can now add as many as are necessary for your topic. Results lists in Scopus are often large, but are easy to refine using source journals, authors, and broad subject areas. To get to Scopus, either go to your Subject Guide or find it using the Article Databases page.
