From TDU to the arts worldScratch the surface of the Director of the Training and Development Unit and you will find an experienced choral singer and a Friend of Te Papa, with university teaching experience in renaissance and mediaeval history. Judith Nathan's interest in the arts, however, was just one driver in her appointment as Academic Director of the College of Design, Fine Arts and Music. Mrs Nathan leaves the Palmerston North-based TDU at the end of the year and takes up her new position in Wellington in January. For the College, her experience with the New Zealand Polytechnic Programme Committee is also important. Mrs Nathan, as it happens, accredited the Wellington Polytechnic Diploma in Fashion in 1996. She also brings to the position skills and experience gained in five years with the TDU, time as a quality manager with the Ministry of Transport and as a lecturer at Canterbury University and Christchurch Polytechnic. She identifies a number of priorities in her new position. "They include the development of links with other University Colleges, particularly those with programmes that can add value to a design or music degree. Examples are programmes in technology, classical studies, or the growing area of arts administration, to which the College of Business can add value." Other projects will include establishing new Fine Arts programmes, attracting more international students to the College, and developing more College programmes for offer at other Massey campuses. Director of Human Resources Annemarie de Castro says Mrs Nathan's time with the Unit has marked an important period for staff development. "Although TDU is the most recently established staff development unit, and still one of the smallest," says Ms de Castro, "it has pioneered a number of activities in New Zealand universities. They include the integration of academic and general staff training, mandatory training courses in teaching for new university staff and a comprehensive suite of research training courses commended by the Academic Audit panel."
