From the Vice Chancellor-There have been many previous occasions on which I have thanked staff for their contributions. There have also been other years in which we have seen significant change at this University. However I think we will all agree that this year, and this occasion, is different. Higgins wins race for track - Manawatu company Higgins Construction has won the tender for the all weather athletics track at Massey, just days after Palmerston North City Council gave the project the green light. NZ companies lagging- New Zealand companies are lagging in acknowledging the importance of environmental responsibility in their business practices. Recycling project proposed Massey could become the first New Zealand university to totally recycle food waste generated on campus, turning scraps into compost to feed Turitea's nationally-famous gardens. Communication launch - While much "rhetorical homage" is being given to dot com, smart work and medium being the message, the essence of good communications will always be people, says Professor Judy McGregor. New Year flame to warm millions - Hundreds of thousands of Chinese people will share New Year's Day at the University's Palmerston North campus when the flame for the 21st Universiade is lit at the Oval. Carpentry course moves - A positive outcome for the Wellington region is how Massey's Wellington Group Manager for the College of Sciences Paula Smith describes the transfer of Massey's carpentry activities to Hutt Valley Polytechnic. First new fine arts lecturer - The College of Design, Fine Arts and Music has just made its first academic appointment for a new Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, starting next year. Garage for Turitea Staff and students at the Turitea site will soon have a garage onsite where cars and other motor vehicles can be repaired. FeaturesShortland Street: the lost episodes-Shortland Street, the most-watched of New Zealand soaps, has made its way into the classroom and the lecture theatre. Recording health history - Two Massey nursing lecturers 'seduced by history" have made important contributions on the history of health to the recently-launched Dictionary of New Zealand Biography Volume 5, 1941 1960. History on show Some of Massey's more interesting events in history could be made into a book in future, using material from displays produced by post-graduate history students. Fifth-time Trax game world champion - Dr Donald Bailey has just become the fifth-time Trax World Champion, after three weekends of Internet games fought against top international competitors. EventsMigrant business pilot programme-A group of international students took part in the first integrated business and English language programme at the Albany campus recently. Ab fab fashion - A major feature of Fashion Show 2000 was colour. Out went the black and drab colours of previous years, in came the bright primary colours, the collections having names like Lolly Sweet, Pacific Paradise and Techno Shepherd. Women's refuge boss conference speaker - Merepeka Raukawa-Tait, chief executive of Women's Refuge in New Zealand, was guest speaker at a recent counselling conference at the College of Education. Michael Baxter - Staff and students of Institute of Molecular BioSsciences and the former Department of Microbiology and Genetics were saddened by Mike' death on November 8, 2000. Primarily for principals - Effective school leadership is more about educational thinking than managerial thinking according to Dr David Stewart's new book Tomorrow's Principals Today. Practice perfects at Paralympics - Since October 1998, Sport Management lecturer Trish Bradbury has been working with Paralympics New Zealand in prepartion for the Sydney 2000 Games. Maori visual arts show-Nine fourth-year Bachelor of Maori Visual Arts students are showing their work at the Matatau Exhibition, now on at the Manawatu Museum. Melbourne alumni reunion- About 50 alumni from Massey and Lincoln gathered for the annual reunion dinner held at the University of Melbourne on 10 November. AwardsThe highest honours for Massey scientists -Awards for Professors Dave Parry and Robers Anderson. Fellowships jumpstart Public Health Research Unit - The granting of four Health Research Council fellowships to Massey's new Public Health Research Unit has given it a flying start, says director Professor Neil Pearce. RSNZ scholarships-A future in the field of product develops looks assured for six secondary school pupils. They are the recipients of Product Development Scholarships for seventh formers, sponsored by the Royal Society of New Zealand and awarded by Massey University, to encourage students into Science and Technology. Top researchers and teachers - Awards celebrating innovation and success in teaching and research were presented to Institute of Molecular BioSciences staff recently. New agriculture scholarship - The development of New Zealand farm business management will be encouraged by a new $3000 scholarship awarded at Massey University by European-based farm managers The Ingleby Company Ltd. NZIM fellowship awarded- Graduate School of Business manager Tony White is awarded his Fellowship to the New Zealand Institute of Managers. Research and developmentWeb of Science- The Library now has the Web of Science database. Web of Science provides multidisciplinary, high-quality research information from the world's leading professional science, social sciences, arts and humanities and business journals. Next step-spuds -About half an acre of land has been planted in the taewa, which will be harvested next April Finance system implementation- Finance Operations along with staff members from ITS and other campuses have been working to introduce the University-wide finance system, Finance One. Science stars- A meeting celebrating science, which starred two top Massey researchers, was hosted at Parliament recently by Science and Technology Minister and Massey Alumnus Pete Hodgson. |
