Ngā Kupu Ora at Turitea Library
Ngā Kupu Ora was created in 2005 in its current location on Level 2 of the Turitea Library, drawing on Māori material from the New Zealand and Pacific Collection.
Ngā Kupu Ora comprises books, serials, newspapers, videos, audio and pictorial items with significant Māori content. Some items are for use in the Library only and are marked with ‘ Not for loan ' stickers. All other items can normally be borrowed by members of the Library.
Items in the collection have been selected using the following criteria:
- All resources in the Māori language
- All bilingual (Māori/English or other language) material
- All resources with a particular Māori cultural perspective
- All biographies of Māori people
- All tribal histories
- All pre-European New Zealand history
- All resources relating to the Treaty of Waitangi.
Recommendations for Purchase
Selection of resources for Ngā Kupu Ora is the responsibility of Library staff. However, we welcome recommendations for purchase from staff, students and users of the collection. Please provide us with as much information as possible about the resource you are recommending. Recommendations can be made by email or by using our Suggest an Item for Purchase Form.
The items in Ngā Kupu Ora are supplemented by electronic resources that are accessible through the Māori Subject Guide.
Māori Land Court Minute Books at Turitea Library
The Turitea Library also has a collection of bound Māori Land Court Minute Books. Our collection is not comprehensive and is focused mainly on the Māori Land Court districts close to the Manawatū area. For a list of our holdings click here.
The minute books are shelved in a separate sequence adjacent to Ngā Kupu Ora. An electronic index is available for the period 1865-1910. The index is not available via our web site but can be searched on selected PCs at any of our campus libraries
The minute books are for use in the Library only and cannot be issued. Limited loans to other campus libraries might be able to be arranged on a case-by-case basis.
Bagnall Collection at Turitea Library
The Turitea Library also has a collection of rare and valuable books known as the Bagnall Collection. The late Graham Bagnall was a leading bibliographic scholar and a former National Librarian of New Zealand. The Library purchased his collection in 1986 and has continued to add items of significance to it.
Items may only be used in the Library (some photocopying restrictions might also apply). Bagnall Collection items can be found on the Library Catalogue, and items can be viewed by inquiring at the Information Desk on Level 2 of the Turitea Library.
The availability of rare books at other libraries in the Massey system is limited. Arrangements can be made to send a Bagnall item to another campus library for use on a ‘Reference only' basis. Please enquire at your local campus library if you require access to this service.
Māori Collections at the Auckland, Hokowhitu and Wellington Libraries
Māori collections at the Auckland, Hokowhitu and Wellington Libraries use kōwhaiwhai spine labels to identify their Māori material. This material is interfiled in their general Dewey sequences. It is expected that separate Māori collections will be developed at the Auckland and Wellington campus libraries once their new library buildings have been developed.
