Algal
Biofuels
Microalgae are being investigated
for the production of renewable and carbon-neutral biofuels under controlled
conditions. Photobioreactors and raceway culture devices are being examined
for the production of the oil-rich biomass. Methods for separating the algae
from the broth are being developed. Extraction of algal oil and its
processing to fuels are being researched. The focus is on using marine algae
that do not depend on freshwater, a commodity that is in short supply globally.
