The International Organization for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (IOBB) is a nonprofit institution that was founded by prominent academics in 1968 for the advancement of biotechnology and bioengineering. The activities of IOBB span all aspects of biotechnology including social, ethical and educational issues. The IOBB has operated with other organizations including the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations University (UNU), and UN-sponsored Microbiology Resource Centers (MIRCENs). The IOBB is administered by an Executive Committee consisting of a chairperson, a past chair, a chairperson-elect and 5 executive members nominated from the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australasia and Europe. National representatives based in various countries lead local activities and serve as contacts for IOBB headquarters in their countries. The New Zealand national representative is Professor Yusuf Chisti. The IOBB global office is currently based in Stockholm, Sweden.
