In her ground-breaking 2003 book Workplace Bullying: A costly business secret, management consultant Andrea W. Needham outlined a workplace problem no one was talking about.

Since then, academic interest in the area has soared. After her death, the Andrea Needham Leadership Charitable Trust was established to foster positive workplace leadership behaviours.

When the trust felt it was time to update Ms Needham’s seminal work, they turned to members of Massey University’s Healthy Work Group because it had researched the topic extensively.

Professor Tim Bentley, Associate Professor Bevan Catley and Dr Natalia D’Souza have revitalised Workplace Bullying to include the latest research findings.

“We have so much more evidence-based knowledge on workplace bullying now, so we have included those insights in this updated edition,” Dr D’Souza says. “At the same time, we worked really hard to keep Andrea Needham’s voice to make sure the book is easily accessible to everyone."

Like the original book, the updated edition includes clear examples to help people identify if they are a victim of workplace bullying and, for managers, it outlines what organisations can do to deal with cases of bullying and prevent a bullying culture.

“Andrea Needham’s work was ground-breaking and it was written for practitioners, not academics, so we have honoured that objective,” Dr D’Souza says.

Dr D’Souza says the book’s release is timely given recent high profile cases of workplace bullying in the news.

“No sector is completely immune and the end result can be devastating for individuals and organisations,” she says. “Workplace bullying can destroy the career paths of good employees, while causing financial loss for organisations.”
