The LipoCre study

This study is to investigate the digestibility and bioavailability of liposomal creatine. It is the first clinical trial of liposomal encapsulated creatine in healthy people.

About this study

Creatine is used as a sports supplement and in some other applications. It is a naturally occurring compound found in foods like fish and meat, and provides energy for rapid, powerful, short-burst high effort in sports.

The most common form of creatine used in supplements is creatine monohydrate (CrM), which can enhance high-intensity performance and training adaptations in various sports.

However, one of the reported side-effects of taking CrM supplements is gut discomfort for an hour or two after ingestion. To address this issue, CrM can be wrapped up into liposomal vesicles (small lipid packages) to increase and speed absorption by the gut.

The LipoCre study aims to investigate whether liposomal creatine provides greater benefits to delivery of creatine into the body, compared to creatine monohydrate. This may lead to further research into possible benefits for sports performance and some aspects of health.

Inclusion criteria

We are looking for healthy men and women who:

  • are aged 18 to 45 years
  • have a body mass index (BMI) of 18-30
  • pass a general health questionnaire
  • provide written consent.

Incentives for participation

Participation will not incur any direct costs except perhaps travel costs (for example, petrol or bus). As koha you will be reimbursed gift vouchers of your choice (usually MTA or supermarket) to sum to a total of $760, which will be provided upon completion of all 6 arms of the study.

Patient information

Download the participant information sheet to get detailed information about what’s involved when you participate in the LipoCre study.

The information sheet will help you decide if you’d like to take part. It sets out why we are doing the study, what your participation would involve, what the benefits and risks to you might be, and what would happen after the study ends. We will go through this information with you and answer any questions you may have.

Before you decide you may want to talk about the study with other people, such as family, whānau, friends, or healthcare providers. Feel free to do this. Whether or not you take part is your choice.
