Kate’s passion for aviation was inspired after taking introductory flying lessons in Hamilton. This passion has seen her gain her commercial pilot license, and undertake a Bachelor of Aviation with Massey, where she is now in her final year. Kate’s display of key professional attributes made her a standout nominee.

Zonta Manawatū established the award to encourage young women entering the traditionally male-dominated career of aviation, and to honour former Zonta International member and pioneering aviator, Amelia Earhart.

Amelia Earhart was a member of the Zonta Club of Boston and New York from 1928 until her disappearance over the Pacific Ocean in 1937. She is well known for breaking down gender-based barriers in her chosen field, fighting for women’s rights to vote, and bring the first person to fly solo across both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

President of Zonta Manawatū, Jayne Nelson, says they are thrilled to be able to offer this award for the first time.

“We believe in eliminating the barriers and bias that often prevents women and young girls from pursuing careers in non-traditional industries. We hope Kate’s success will inspire others to follow in her footsteps and break down barriers, just as Amelia Earhart did in the 1930s.”

Zonta International is a global organisation of professionals working together to empower women and girls through service and advocacy. Educational programmes and awards that support women’s education are central to this mission.
