Thirty staff members gathered at the Wellington campus this week for the seventh annual Women@Massey Leadership Seminar.

The event, which was organised by College of Humanities and Social Sciences senior lecturer and Women@Massey co-convenor Dr Cat Pausé, provided women staff members with the opportunity to further develop a network of women in leadership positions at Massey. Participants also heard from a number of speakers, including School of Psychology senior lecturer Dr Jane Rovins, School of Art Associate Professor Ann Shelton, School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing senior lecturer Dr Cathy Strong, head of School of Art Associate Professor Huhana Smith, and Tertiary Education Union national secretary Sharn Riggs.

Senior lecturer Dr Temitope Egbelakin, from School of Engineering and Advanced Technology, and seminar participant said it was amazing to be part of the programme. “Participating and mingling with the right women can get you further than self and book knowledge,” she says.

These thoughts were echoed by health, safety and emergency management advisor Jo Fox. “It was a valuable day, filled with great advice. I think my favourite piece was to ‘make sure you have your tribe around you’; that really resonated with me. We sometimes don’t do this as well as we should and many women can feel lonely or isolated at work.”

The seminar was supported by the Office of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor People and Organisational Development and rotates around the campuses. Next year, it will be held at the Auckland campus.
