Te Wiki o te reo Māori (Māori Language Week).
Next week marks Aotearoa’s annual celebration of te reo Māori with Te Wiki o te reo Māori (Māori Language Week) and Massey staff are encouraged to embrace te reo Māori at mahi (work).
There are a variety of resources available on the Maori@Massey website, including email greetings and pronunciation guides for Massey te reo names.
Massey University is a major sponsor of the prestigious Ngā Manu Kōrero (National Secondary School Speech Competition), which is being held in Palmerston North next week 10-12th September. Staff are invited to attend the competition at the Regent on Broadway to hear some of the country’s up and coming orators in what will be the 54th year of the competition.
Te Wiki o te reo Māori was first celebrated in 1975 and now incorporates Māori Language Day on September 14, the day that commemorates the presentation of the 1972 Māori language petition to parliament. Te Taura Whiri o te reo Māori, (Māori Language Commission) says the week is an opportunity for concentrated celebration, promotion and encouragement of the language.
New Zealanders are encouraged to contribute to te reo Māori revitalisation in whatever way they can including:
- Make te reo welcome at work and in the community
- Pronounce Māori words correctly when speaking English
- Learn more, and use what you know
There are a variety of resources available through Te Taura Whiri (the Māori Language Commission) including the Kōrero Kawhe card, originally created at Massey University, which encourages people to order their coffee in te reo Māori.
