Mary McLaughlin is a writer and editor based in Ōtepoti Dunedin, Aotearoa New Zealand.
She completed an Honours Degree and an MA (Distinction) in English at the University of Otago. Her Masters thesis analysed how women characters subvert narrative direction and movement in Chaucer’s dream vision poems. Mary has worked as a researcher, university tutor, editor, plain English specialist and communications advisor. She is currently working for the Dunedin City Council.
In 2011, Mary founded Little Red Pen, which offers coaching and mentoring, writing workshops and editing services. She works with writers from the community, business and academic sectors to develop their skills and confidence. She is particularly interested in working with people to distill what they really want to say and create strong, clear documents that have integrity and reflect an organisation’s values and kaupapa.
Mary has had stints in Melbourne and Wellington, but always comes back to Dunedin where she revels in the hills, harbour, deep friendships, community and crisp, still air. She shares her life with one lanky Australian, two gorgeous boys and four hens.
